San Antonio Spurs vs. LA Lakers: Game 4 Preview, Schedule & Predictions
If the Los Angeles Lakers had entered the postseason completely healthy, this could have been a fantastic playoff series.
Alas, the injury bug finally took a bite out of Kobe Bryant's ageless legs, depriving fans of a thrilling clash between the Black Mamba and Tim Duncan, two early nominees for the All-Century team.
With the graying Lakers lineup hobbled, the San Antonio Spurs have ruthlessly taken over the series. They won each of the first three games by double digits and handed L.A. a 31-point shellacking in Game 3, the worst home playoff loss in the franchise's storied history.
Andrew Goudelock will start at shooting guard for L.A., and he brings an MVP pedigree. Unfortunately, that was MVP of the D-League, and these are the NBA playoffs. Though the Lakers will come out fighting, they don't really have a puncher's chance in this one.
Sports is all about character and perseverance, but very few sane individuals would give the Lakers any chance of winning four straight games against San Antonio and pulling off a crazy comeback. That sort of thing just does not happen in the NBA, no matter how much character and will a team has.
L.A. isn't waving the white flag quite yet, and their focus is set on winning just one game. If that works on Sunday, they'll try to repeat it in Game 5. But the Spurs are not prone to narcolepsy, and the Lakers won't catch them napping.
Though the franchise circumstances and team makeup are radically different, the Lakers find themselves in roughly the same spot as the New York Knicks in last year's playoffs: down 0-3 to a vastly superior opponent.

By the time the series headed to California, the Lakers were all but French toast thanks in large part to Parker. Though the Frenchman has had the benefit of guarding a decimated Lakers frontcourt, his offensive output has continued to be MVP-caliber.

Rebounding was one of the few advantages the Lakers had over the Spurs entering the series. Yet, despite fielding two seven-footers, L.A. has been out-rebounded in these playoffs (43.0 to 39.7 per game).
With DeJuan Blair figuring to slot in for the injured Tiago Splitter, the Spurs will be undersized in the middle. Though Blair plays bigger than his 6'7" size suggests, it'll be a tough matchup against Pau and Dwight, plus Earl Clark who figures to start for MWP.
Matt Bonner, aka the Red Mamba, could also start at the 4 with Duncan sliding to the 5, but this would not aid the matchup issues down low. Nevertheless, Timmy will find a way to neutralize all his team's disadvantages. He's just that good.

Tiger Woods Will Not Participate in Wells Fargo Championship
Current World No. 1 Tiger Woods will not participate in the upcoming 2013 Wells Fargo Championship according to his agent, Mark Steinberg.
Steinberg confirmed in an email via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN) that reports of Woods skipping the tournament were "accurate," with the American star "sticking to his long break after the Masters," where he finished in a tie for fourth place.
The report goes on to state that after the first Major of the year, Woods customarily takes three weeks of. Which, due to a change in scheduling this year, will see him miss the Wells Fargo Championship—scheduled to take place next week.
Woods' absence from the tournament will be a huge blow for tournament organizers, who would have planned for a big crowd at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. However, Woods' absence will provide a great chance for golf's biggest names to close the gap on him at the top of the world golf standings, where he recently clinched the top spot from Rory McIlroy.
Woods has enjoyed a stellar 2013 season season so far, with four top-five finishes and three tournament victories from his six appearances on tour.
He will have been somewhat frustrated with his performances at Augusta in the first few days, but his final round and rise up the leaderboard showed that he still has what it takes to be a force on the hallowed course. His illegal drop and subsequent two-stroke penalty remained the biggest talking point of the tournament, however, and ultimately cost him a chance at a fifth green jacket.
Still, the fourth-placed finish was nothing to be ashamed of, and has him poised to continue his success throughout the remainder of 2013.

The NHL trade contract has come and gone, and while there were a couple of big names moved on Wednesday, particularly Marian Gaborik (h/t TSN's Darren Dreger) and Jason Pominville (h/t the Associated Press, USA Today), it had been a slow day on the trade entrance. Trade amount was low with just 17 deals made on April 3. Bigger titles have been moved early in the day with Jarome Iginla and Jaromir Jagr being the headliners, but with only four to five teams removed from playoff contention, there weren't many sellers across the group. I believe the NHL should move the contract even closer to the end of the standard time. This season it should have been at the least a week from today, April 10 for instance. In a complete season, instead of the conclusion of February, I think the group should move the date to the first or second week of March. Listed below are the three reasons why. 3. More Teams Would Be Expunged from Rivalry. With more clubs out of contention, there would be more vendors in play, and rates on participants would be lowered. Thus, teams in competition would make even more offers, and teams in a rebuilding mode would be even more encouraged to move people. With the current dates, not many groups are extremely from the race, but this will be fixed by changing the contract date. Despite falling into deep holes against the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals, they dug themselves out with some of the scrappiest, hard-nosed baseball in recent memory before absolutely dominating the Detroit Tigers in a four-game sweep that secured the team's second title in three years.
On April Fool's Day, they will find themselves in a familiar role as underdogs on the road going up against Clayton Kershaw, one of the best pitchers in the world.
But the San Francisco Giants are not a group to shy away from a challenging game. In fact, they relish it. The Giants will certainly come out with an extra pep in their step having to go against their most hated division rival to start out the year.
However, that doesn't mean the Dodgers won't do the exact same. They are stacked from top to bottom and have a sick feeling in their stomach after watching the men in orange and black take home the World Series trophy again last October.
On paper, this series may appear as three small segments of a lengthy 162-game schedule. To the players and the fans, it represents a whole lot more than that. Here are a few reasons why this opening series is so crucial for the Giants.
The Los Angeles Dodgers' new ownership group, Guggenheim Baseball Management, is not afraid to spend money. And that is a massive understatement.
Entering Opening Day, the Dodgers have a payroll of $215 million (via USA Today), trailing only the New York Yankees, who are at a whopping $228.8 million. To put that in perspective, the Dodgers' Opening Day payroll last season was $95.1 million (via Los Angeles Times).
The Dodgers want to win and they want to win now. They are clearly willing to pay whatever it takes to get to that point.
Along with all of that added salary cap came a plethora of talent, creating a baseball team ready to compete as a perennial contender.
All of the spotlight on the Dodgers' spending combined with the recent championship success of the Giants will propel this rivalry into a new golden era. People around the country want to watch these two teams play each other.
With both the Yankees and Red Sox potentially being out of the race in the AL East, the Giants and Dodgers have a chance to take over as the No. 1 rivalry in all of baseball this season.
Last year, the Giants were swept in their opening series on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks. For those that are incredibly superstitious, they may wish for that same fate in order to increase the odds of repeating as World Series champs.
This is a series that is going to set the tone for the whole year. Most experts are predicting the NL West to be a two-horse race between these two historic clubs. The Giants need to establish that this is still their division and prove that they are the favorites for the pennant.
But it won't be easy. In fact, there is a possibility that the team could indeed get swept. Clayton Kershaw has been the best pitcher in the NL the past two seasons and has generally been at his best against the Giants.
Things won't get any easier in the second game, as the Dodgers will send out their high-profile free-agent signing, Zack Greinke, another dominant pitcher who would be the ace of most staffs around the league.
In the final game of the series, Tim Lincecum will take the mound for the Giants. Based on his struggles in spring training, where he posted an ugly 10.57 ERA (via NBC Sports), there is definitely a reason to be concerned about the outcome of this one.
While winning the series is a very challenging task, the Giants will be up for it. Even if they are not successful, they will battle their absolute hardest and show the Dodgers that they are not intimidated by their new talent. At the same time, it will be crucial to do everything possible to avoid a momentum-changing three-game sweep.
Heading into the 2013 season, the San Francisco Giants will have a big target on their backs, and the pressure will be more than usual with the raised expectations of their two World Series titles.
Three star players in particular have a little extra pressure on them for this opening series: Matt Cain, Buster Posey and Tim Lincecum.
This is the first time Matt Cain will pitch for the Giants on Opening Day. Lincecum has been the team's ace coming into the season the past four years, and he will now pass over the torch to Cain.

That's the kind of money you get when you win two World Series, an MVP, Comeback Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and a batting title in your first three seasons in the big leagues.
As history has taught us, some players struggle coming off a mega-deal like Posey's without the incentive to earn more money. Posey now has the challenge and pressure of living up to that hefty salary, which will no doubt be a topic of discussion throughout the opening series of the year.
While Posey and Cain have the pressure of delivering as the faces of the franchise, Tim Lincecum may be in danger of losing his job.
Lincecum had a miserable 2012 campaign where he went 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA. He lost his starting spot in the playoffs last year, and if he doesn't improve on his high ERA from the spring in his first handful of starts, who knows how Bruce Bochy will handle the situation.
Wednesday is a huge day for Tim Lincecum, and everyone will be watching to see how he opens up the final season of his two-year contract. If he doesn't improve his numbers from 2012, this could sadly be the last year we see Timmy in a Giants uniform.

NON-TENNIS STUFF:The 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge – As of today, I have completed the 30 day green smoothie challenge put together by SimpleGreenSmoothies.com. A green smoothie (if you don't know) is a drink blended up from fruit, water (or other liquid) and leafy green vegetables. I have had more kinds of kale (green, purple, curly) this month than I knew existed. Did it change my life? I'm not sure. But I'm going to keep drinking them and I'll probably let you know.

Lewandowski wrestled free off Pepe and launched himself at the ball to volley it into the net. The game was only eight minutes in but it was not their first chance. Two minutes earlier Sami Khedira had been robbed and Marco Reus was soon racing through, as he would be often.
He brought a sharp save from Diego López and the rebound dropped just too wide for Lewandowski to be able to turn it towards goal.
There was a collective speed about Dortmund that was breathtaking. Madrid struggled to get out from the back and, when they did, it felt like they were walking into a trap. A quick robbery and Dortmund were off again, the noise rising in the stadium as they advanced. Their transitions were swift and frightening, Madrid's space closed down in numbers. With the lead, Ilkay Gundogan controlled the pace, switching gears, and Reus kept on running. He was still running right to the finish.
In the forward bursts, some of the touches at speed were superb. Madrid were momentarily lost, their only strategy to seek free-kicks as a temporary respite. Soon Jakub Blaszczykowski was dashing into the area on the right and ready to shoot only for Madrid's centre forward, Gonzalo Higuaín, to block.
Götze and Lewandowski then just failed to connect and in the next attack Reus again was on the run. Into the area he went, tumbling under challenge from Raphaël Varane. He appeared to have been bundled over, his ankle possibly clipped, but it was not entirely clear.
Suddenly, immediately, in the midst of the indignation, Madrid were level. Hummels played a dreadful pass back to his keeper, Higuaín reached it and slid the ball across for Ronaldo to finish simply. From 2–0 to 1–1 in the blink of an eye. Yet if Madrid appeared to be back in it as the half-time whistle went, the sensation was a fleeting one. Five minutes into the second half, Dortmund were back in front.
Sergio Ramos had furiously sprinted to the linesman to insist that Lewandowski had been offside when the Pole turned neatly and nudged past López from seven yards. He was wrong, but for a moment the home supporters held their breath.
When Lewandowski scored his next goal, the hat-trick effort, their breath was taken away. Again he turned sharply on his right foot, spinning away from Pepe to make a tiny bit of space for himself. This time, from further out, he thumped a rocket shot into the top of the net – a brilliant effort to complete a brilliant trio of goals.
And he was not finished. Gundogan's rising shot was superbly saved by López and then, on 67 minutes, the Dutch referee, Bjorn Kuipers, gave a penalty. Inevitably it was Reus breaking into the box, to be pushed down by Xabi Alonso. Lewandowski took the penalty, opting for a long, arcing, fast run-up, like a bowler coming in from round the wicket, and thrashed the ball into the net.
Four goals were not sufficient; still Dortmund's players poured forward, still they attacked. But for López there might have been a fifth or a sixth. The chances were theirs. Until, in the last minute, Roman Weidenfeller had to make a smart save at the feet of Ronaldo. Then, in stoppage time, Varane shot over. It would have been more than Madrid deserved.

It is a sorry shame that Manchester City could not find a way to keep Manchester United just a little bit closer as the finish line nears.
Even after picking up two points in the table thanks to United's draw at West Ham United and City's win over Wigan, City is still 13 points back with only 18 possible points to gain. The title race is not over, but you can see it from here.
And while it is a good thing that no team is seriously pushing City for second place in the league, that fact takes a lot of the thrill out of the end of the season. Especially since, after the weekend's visit to White Hart Lane, City will not face another team presently in the top seven in the table.
They will have to face West Bromwich Albion, but it will be at the Etihad. West Brom's away form this season? Nine losses and a minus-9 goal difference as the visiting side. Right.
So it's a very probable second-place finish in the league, a very possible FA Cup win, and then the summer transfer window beckons.

In that same article, though, the reason you cannot dismiss Fellaini as a possibility for City is laid plain: "Given the way he destroyed United and City, don't rule out late interest from them."
To paraphrase Rick Pitino, Lionel Messi is not walking through that door. Cristiano Ronaldo is not walking through that door.
But the No. 3 scorer in La Liga is Radamel Falcao, and if Manchester United does not want him (per The Sun), maybe City does.
Falcao is averaging nearly a goal per game in La Liga while leading Atletico Madrid to what looks like it will be a third-place finish in the league table.
He is 27 years old and clearly entering the prime of his career. Adding Falcao to City's already potent offensive attack would cause further consternation for league rivals and might be the ingredient that emboldens City to better Champions League performances.
So those prior three possible moves would each call for absurd outlays of cash. City gets stick all the time for buying players and trying to buy titles.
Per The Mirror, City is semi-seriously intrigued with former United prospect Ravel Morrison. The 20-year-old midfielder is on loan at Birmingham from West Ham United and his recent performances are apparently turning heads.
None of City's developmental players seem ready to make the leap into the XI, and City's most recent transfer splurge on a young midfielder has been an ongoing heartbreak.
It has become something of a foregone conclusion that one-time darling Samir Nasri has one foot and perhaps three more toes out the door at City, per The Guardian.
This is the sort of stuff that happens when you come to a club with big press clippings, then score one goal in 23 appearances in league play.
Nasri's tap-in against Chelsea in the recent FA Cup semifinal was nice and all, but in terms of redemption coming in one single play, it wasn't exactly J.D. Drew's $14 million grand slam.
If in fact (per The Mirror) the likes of Paris Saint-Germain wants to shuttle Nasri back home, City should be willing to do it for a case of Veuve Clicquot and a croissant to be named later.
