England manager Roy Hodgson leads tributes to former West Brom kitman Dave ... - Birmingham Mail

Managers and players, superstars and legends come and go at any Premier League club, but few have the same impact as West Bromwich Albion's unassuming kitman Dave Matthews.

He was on first name terms with the likes of the legendary Jeff Astle and Tony Brown, Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham, Bryan Robson and big Ron Atkinson to name only a few.

Albion will mark his death with a one-minute silence before Saturday's fixture with Newcastle at The Hawthorns – the ground where he had worked up until last year since 1961.

Baggies Sporting & Technical Director Richard Garlick added: "Everyone at the club is deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Dave's passing.

But his sudden death came as a shock to those close by, as only recently he had told friends and family that he was feeling as good as ever.

Chairman of West Bromwich Albion Supporters Club, John Homer, who was also a close friend said: "I could sit here all day and I wouldn't be able to find the words to say how much I thought of him."

Matthews witnessed FA Cup and League Cup triumphs as well as six promotions during his tenure in the Black Country. He was incredibly popular with the past and present players, supporters, journalists and other employees at the club.

A mark of the man was measured at his sell-out 50th anniversary dinner last year when more than 360 people attended, including 60 former players.
